FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Re: Parry Sound High School Open House
The Regional Economic Development Advisory Committee (REDAC), along with the Near North District School Board, and the Labour Market Group are presenting the Parry Sound High School Manufacturing Open House event which will take place on November 17th.
Up to 80 Grade 10 Career students from the Parry Sound High School will be visiting Connor Industries and the Shaw Almex facilities. The students will learn about the many diverse careers offered in the community, local businesses and they will also be given the opportunity to connect with local job prospects. The students will be given guided tours of Connor Industries and the Shaw Almex facilities, and have the chance to ask questions about the varied careers existing within these companies. During the lunch break, the students will be given tours of the Canadore College West Parry Sound Campus, and have their lunch in the new student lounge.
Andrea Stoppa, Acting Executive Director of the Labour Market Group believes, “This is a great opportunity for our local employers to showcase their industry and the many career opportunities available within the manufacturing sector. These students are tomorrow’s workforce and this day provides students and employers a chance to connect, dispelling the myths that there are no career prospects in the local market or that there is not a local labour market talent pool.”
The Parry Sound High School Manufacturing Open House event was one of the results from a business retention and expansion survey of the manufacturing sector in the Parry Sound Area. The results indicated that many manufacturing employers felt finding qualified employees a challenge; however many Parry Sound High School students felt there were no local employment opportunities. Last year, 50 Grade 10 Career students visited Connor Industries, the Parry Sound Airport, and Found Industries, to learn about the many facets of these companies. After the success of last year’s event, all parties felt the event should be held annually.

One of the Regional Economic Development Advisory Committee’s (REDAC) 2010/2011 initiatives is to facilitate the provision of adequate and reliable high speed internet services to the Parry Sound Area Development Community. Due to the results and feedback of last year’s approximately 500 surveys, REDAC was able to make some big improvements. Some new high speed internet towers were constructed and may have addressed many of the gap areas that were present in the Salmon Lake Road and Otter Lake area. The survey results were officially mapped by the West Parry Sound Geography Network and had been sent to internet providers. This map is available HERE.
REDAC is hoping to contrast and compare last year's results, as well as broaden the results base. Another High Speed Internet Survey has been created to help gather data which will lend itself to meeting these informational needs. To take this survey,
